Vergissmeinnicht
The ground floor of a historic building on the Graben in Bruneck, right beside the Florian Gate, housed, among other things, a pastry shop, later a travel agency and a café; most recently there were plans to use the premises as a restaurant. Today the building is used by the social cooperative VergissMeinNicht, which produces clothing on the upper floor and sells it on the ground floor; the shop fit-out is part of the project. The conversion is limited to a few targeted interventions. The character and defining structure of the façade are preserved, and the building’s original appearance is brought out more clearly again; the entrance portal on the north façade, through which the shop opens to the street, was redesigned. The old natural stone floor was ground down; compared with its former mirror-like finish, the matt surface fundamentally changes the character of the space.
Missing areas were patched with screed, so that the individual building phases remain legible. The existing substructure of the suspended ceiling had to be retained; it is painted black and disappears behind the new lighting. Executed on a limited budget, the fit-out is deliberately reduced and directs attention to the clothing on display; between the unfinished, shell-like space and the soft fabrics, a field of tension emerges.
